happened in newtown, connecticut, the unimaginable tragedy that everybody's been talking about nationally. i think it's important that everybody take notice that the teachers at that school and the officers that responded did so as we've been training since columbine also here in san francisco and i think were it not for the heroic efforts of both the teachers and officers that that tragedy would have been way worse. the teachers, instead of evacuating and emptying those kids into the hallway, secured in place which kept them safe. actually it cost some of the teachers their lives, god bless them, and then the police officers as you saw them come on scene went straight into the school, which is exactly what san francisco police officers would do when there's the immediate imnepblt danger of serious danger of death, active shooter we'll go straight in. it's our job to put ourselves in harm's way and the cops in connecticut did that. on a very different note -- oh, i'm sorry -- we will be reinitiating our active shooter training that most of us that have been in the department for a whi
that might allow people to go in different direction. the unfortunate and very tragic incident in connecticut in sandy hook elementary school of course heightened everybody's awareness of what violence can really be all about. and as we have been not only responding, reacting to this national tragedy that i think president obama has adequately described as broken all of our hearts, and in every funeral that has taken place, for those 20 innocent children and six innocent adults in the school districts, and school administrators, we obviously have shared in that very tragic event, all of us. it has touched everybody across this country. san francisco is no different. and i have shared that emotional experience with the supervisor and everybody here, in our law enforcement, and in our health department as well. the question for us, then, is what do we do about it? and not only can we share in this tragedy and signal our sympathies to the families as we've done, but we've got to do something more. and this is where i want to make sure i recognize all of the people that are in that effort of doin

it was hurricane sandy, the need to spend on the home; whether it was the tragedy in connecticut, and took away the feel-good factor-- it was a confluence of events that led to a "should have been better" holiday season. >> reporter: a big part of the problem was in the densely populated northeast, where more than a fifth of country's retail sales take place. holiday spending priorities shifted after hurricane sandy as homeowners focused more on repairs than on gifts. also dragging down sales was uncertainty about the so-called fiscal cliff, tax hikes and spending cuts set to take effect next year. if lawmakers don't reach a deal to avoid it, consumers could see higher taxes eating into their paychecks. even online sales suffered. compared to past years of double-digit growth, this year, online holiday sales rose only about 8%, compared to nearly 16% last year. overall, holiday spending accounts for up to 30% of retailers' annual sales, so the disappointing season is a concern for an economy struggling to recover. >> consumers need to have more confidence. consumers need to feel that their jobs
. in connecticut, we picked up about six inches of snow before it did change over to rain, which it's going to stay as all rain at this point, but we do still have winter storm warnings and advisories posted, now mostly across central and northern new england, where we are still looking at additional snowfall accumulations. and look at that all across northern vermont, areas that want it, especially in the ski resorts, should pick up more than two feet of snow. the purple area is where we should see a foot or more, and areas back across massachusetts only an additional inch or so, especially inland areas where it is still all snow right now. as for wind gusts, the jersey shore, bricktownship, new jersey, barnegat bay, new jersey, picked up wind gusts near hurricane force, 70 to 75-mile-per-hour wind gusts were reported through the night last night. we did also in dover, delaware, pick up a 64-mile-per-hour wind gust. so the winds along the coast have been brutal, but they are weakening right now. we do still have gusts near 50 miles per hour in boston, but all across the rest of the mid-atlantic re

"starting point" begins right now. >>> well, our starting point, a brutal winter storm battering the northeast and torturing holiday travelers all over the country. here it is on the radar. the system is expected to dump up to two feet of snow on central maine today. six states are under winter storm warnings, pennsylvania, new york, massachusetts, new hampshire, vermont, and of course maine. everyone there could see at least a foot of snow. more than 200,000 customers spanning several states are already without power. more than 1700 flights had to be cancelled yesterday, hundreds more have already been taken off the board this morning and that number is expected to climb. six deaths are being blamed on this system since tuesday, and the threat hasn't passed yet. meteorologist bonnie schneider tracking the storm from the cnn weather center in atlanta. but first inez is live in syracuse, new york, where she's been -- there's a great deal of sno
across new york and long island, across the connecticut sound and really heavy downpours into boston and drive a little further north and it's all snow. that combined with strong wind is making for a very messy day today. so many people are out and about, trying to enjoy holiday time or maybe just heading back to work or to the stores to return gifts. but unfortunately we're seeing heavy downpours into bridgeport, connecticut and once you start heading to upstate new york, it's accumulation. we're talking about a foot or more for upstate new york, 3 to 6 for places like massachusetts, worcester and the berkshires. the pocono mountains will see about 6 inches of snow and into northwestern new jersey you're still looking at snow as well. this is a strong area of low pressure, it will work its way across the northeast. the cold air coming in behind it will help enhance the heaviest snow across the great lakes and extreme northern new england. we're also experiencing some bitterly cold temperatures right here in the south. this morning it's 35 in atlanta, 33 in birmingham. the cold air i

of teachers? if you have a madman like you had in connecticut, and we went to newtown, we went and rallied right outside of newtown at churches there. when you have a mad man comes in and he feels the teacher is armed, they become the first target. you're dealing with people with automatic and semiautomatic weapons. a teacher will not be able to stop that with a regular gun or even an automatic gun. again, who will mandate that for all schools? who will pay for that? it is not the solution. the solution is the way you stop a bad guy with a gun is take the gun, not try to have a good guy with a gun. you take the gun. then he's just a bad guy and we can deal with him being bad differently than we deal with a bad guy with a gun with 100 rounds of ammunition. >> sir, great to see you. >> thank you. >> as always, you can watch the reverend weeknights 6:00 p.m. eastern on msnbc. later in the show action i'll have a chance to speak with the mayor of marlboro, new jersey about that city's plan to have armed guards in all of its schools come january. >>> meanwhile, we switch gears to talk about the
to be saying that. let's bring in now senator richard blumenthal, democrat from connecticut. we were just listening together, senator, to harry reid. we are hearing that he is working on another way. what are you hearing? >> well, what i'm hearing is exactly what he just said on the floor of the united states senate, which is our common ground as a nation is to extend tax cuts for everyone with the threshold income of 200,000. that means tax cut extensions up to 250,000, so the vast majority of americans see a benefit. keeping faith with the middle class of america is common ground among democrats and republicans. what is needed now is a compromise that permits the house to go forward. >> so, senator, is senator harry reid working on a different possibility, a different bill than what was just mentioned, the 250,000 that you were also reiterating? >> the majority leader will have to speak for himself on what his negotiations are, but i think from where the end game is in the short term, avoiding the fiscal cliff, everybody agrees has to happen. let's put aside the brings manship and games

the horrific school shooting in newtown, connecticut. but are more guns in our schools really the answer? "outfront" tonight, ryan, political analyst, roland martin. good to see you. is this just playing up to the nra or a plausible solution? >> it's certain ly not a plausible solution, but the problem is, there are no plausible solutions. there's a guy, a criminalnologist who wrote a great piece about this. the thing with mass shootings, these guys are well prepared. and so, the idea from the right that you're dpoipg going to arm politician official, have them at every school is false and the idea on the left that you're going to eliminate guns, that's also false. you have to look at the gun violence problem more broadly rather than fighting the last war. >> but there is a disconnect in this conversation. the quote from frank lutz. here's what he had to say about the nra's propos. >> the public wants guns out of the schools, not in and they're not asking for a security official or someone else. i don't think the nra is listening. i don't think they understand. most americans would prote
